Lisa Leitl, Singer-Songwriter
Since 2016, Lisa has been working alongside both individuals with dementia and their care partners. She began this work as a visiting artist for the Brain Fitness Club and its various locations in Central Florida. Here, she discovered her gift for connecting with those living with dementia and their care partners. Her work has expanded to facilitating support groups, along with being invited to speak at conferences and other community events. She has witnessed firsthand the Power of Music and the arts and their effects on those experiencing brain changes.
Working alongside Lisa, many individuals with a dementia diagnosis have received the benefits that are available when music is thoughtfully applied.
“Exactly how or why music works in these ways is not yet fully understood. However, there is a growing body of evidence showing that, even when other neural pathways are disrupted, those that are associated with listening to music remain intact. The result is that music can engage and activate parts of the brain that, due to disease progression, have otherwise become inaccessible.” – Ask The Doctors, Memory from UCLA Health, Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Program
“Caregivers find the person lost to them in the context of music.”
— Dr. Borna Bonakdarpour, MD
Music can also create a relaxed and calming environment for care partners. Setting aside time for relaxation and self-care can be challenging, but finding just 5 minutes to listen to well-selected music can be a welcome relief. If you find that self-care is becoming increasingly difficult, Lisa is happy to spend some one-on-one time with you. Here, you can discuss ways to integrate music and perhaps mindfulness practices to help you take care of your own well-being so that you can continue to care for your loved one.
